TENNIS players can take their skills to the opening of a brand new tennis centre tomorrow.

The Townsville Regional Tennis Centre at Kalynda Chase, Bohle Plains, features 10 International Tennis Federation standard hard courts, including a show court for professional tournament play. Townsville City Council Mayor Les Tyrell said the centre was part of an effort to increase sporting and recreation opportunities for Townsville residents.

‘‘The new tennis centre is in a prime location within one of the major growth corridors of Townsville,’’ he said. ‘‘These facilities will be available for competitive and recreational tennis players as well as local families, and we hope that this new premier sporting facility will also attract major tennis events to the region.’’ The centre, owned by Urbex and The Lancini Group, was jointly funded by the council, the State Government and Tennis Queensland.

The complex will be run by national company Lifetime Tennis. Junior tennis players from around North Queensland will today christen the court, competing in the Tennis Queensland Junior Development Series tournament. The centre will open to the public tomorrow, with festivities kicking off at 9am.
